The Rising is neither of those: it is the interface, the first-contact style the rest of your chart drives through the world. Treating the Sun as your first impression is the most common beginner mistake, because that job belongs to the Rising.
How do I find my Sun, Moon and Rising signs?
Your Sun sign comes from your birth date alone. Your Moon sign needs the date and a rough time, because the Moon changes sign every two to three days. Your Rising sign needs your exact birth time and birthplace, because the Ascendant is the sign rising over the eastern horizon at one specific moment and location.
How often does the rising sign change?
The Ascendant changes sign roughly every one to two hours. The Sun takes about a month per sign and the Moon two to three days, so the Rising moves far faster than either. That is why only people born within the same short window share your rising sign, and why it is the most personal point of the Big 3. Do I need my exact birth time?
For the Sun, no. For the Moon, a rough time is usually enough. For the Rising, yes: without an exact birth time there is no Ascendant and no house placement to read, so we will not guess one. If you do not know your time, start with the Sun and Moon and add the Rising later.
